2007 Reader Survey Highlights

Our first online survey drew a strong 20% response rate – an indication of our readers’ engagement with the magazine and its mission. The survey covered the four issues of Edible Chesapeake published in 2007. Subscribers comprised 41% of respondents. Of all respondents, 66% said they read three-quarters or more of each issue; 88% read half or more. The responses quoted below are verbatim.

85% say they have “been moved to action” by a story in Edible Chesapeake:

  • “Each issue reminds me to stay local and appreciate local suppliers and the hinterland where this is produced.”
  • “Great source for finding out local growers and making new connections!”
  • “I am a Master Gardener and practice what you write about as well as giving info to County residents.”
  • “Often by contacting producers to purchase items for re-sale”
56% have patronized a business because of an ad in Edible Chesapeake:
  • “I make a conscious effort to patronize the stores and restaurants that advertise through you b/c of their local roots.”
  • “I started shopping more at my local farmers market on account of the eat local philosophy.”
  • “I did visit several farmers' markets and stands in the Baltimore area because of their ads.”
  • “have used several companies for my restaurant”
  • “I try and support the vendors who advertise in the magazine.”
What do readers want to see more of?
  • honestly, more advertising would be nice. i use this as a resource for buying local products”
  • “Would like to see more ads from the Annapolis eastern shore area”
  • “I would like more advertisements and stories of Virginia resources.”
  • “I'm not exaggerating; I really do think it's great. It would be great to have more advertisers who are more local to DC.”

What else our readers told us:

  • “We are slowly but surely changing our lifestyle because of the education we are getting. This publication is a part of that.”
  • “Any information that lets me know where I can buy local food and what restaurants serve it is very, very valuable. I would say that I look for that above all else - whether in an article or ad.”
  • “I love reading the ads and finding new producers who are just a drive away.”
  • “I find it beautiful and affirming. I already shop as much as I can at farmers markets, and follow the local food beat, so I'm not likely to be radically changed by it. I just really enjoy it.”
  • “I enjoy what I have read because I feel a greater awareness in myself about sustainable environments and doing what one can to support farmers, growers, etc., in my area.”
  • “I really treasure it. Thank you!”

Improvements we’ll introduce in 2008 based on survey feedback:

  • Streamlined design elements and more “breathing room” for editorial – although we still want to provide as much great content as possible in every issue!
  • Geographically targeted Notable Edibles layout – with preferential positioning for full page ads
  • More user-friendly Advertiser Directory
  • “Scene At Market” back page feature will highlight farmers markets throughout the greater Chesapeake Bay region with photos submitted by readers
  • More connectivity between the print magazine and the ediblechesapeake.com website for more reader input and community interaction
